What is FDM 3D printing?
FDM (fused deposition modelling) is an additive manufacturing process in which a thermoplastic filament is heated and extruded layer by layer to build up a three-dimensional part. It is the most widely used 3D printing technology for functional parts and prototypes. FDM printers can work with a broad range of thermoplastic materials — from general-purpose PLA to tougher, impact-resistant PETG — and (with multi-material hardware) can produce parts in multiple simultaneous filament colours.
At 3D Quality Prints, all work is produced on FDM hardware operated by our specialist team in Wimborne, Dorset. FDM is the right technology for functional parts, replacement components, prototypes, and custom accessories — it handles a wide range of materials and geometries at a price point that makes single-part and small-batch production viable.
For applications requiring smoother surface finish, higher accuracy, or different material properties, we'll advise honestly if FDM is or isn't the right fit for your job.
